Chapter Thirteen

That Evening

I wasn’t sure where I was, or how I even got here; I had just strode, no destination in mind. Now, I found myself sitting on the edge of a bridge, my feet bouncing off the wall as I kicked them out, staring down at the river.

Under the light of the moon, the water below me appeared almost inky, rather than its usual crystalline blue. Even in the low light, it seemed to glisten, and I wondered vaguely if rivers on earth had ever looked so beautiful. The quiet of the evening encompassed me like a blanket, muffling everything but the gentle crash of waves against the distant riverbank, hundreds of feet below me.

I thought about how odd it was that, even when your own world grinds to a halt, everything else continues around you. It made me feel almost insignificant to know that, in the grand scheme of things, I was but an infinitesimal piece of a bigger puzzle. For all the worrying I’d done, the challenges I’d faced, I was still only one person, and my fate and decisions wouldn’t change the world. It was simultaneously comforting and depressing.

Just as A-jax had warned me, my emotions that had been suppressed by my off switch over the last month had come flooding back. Since I switched my sentiments back on, I had faced a range of emotions. Firstly, I met rage, then came the despair, grief and finally the depression.

I was furious for several reasons; Hector may still be alive, and it had taken us a year to work this out. If he was still breathing, God knows what he’s been through, we— no, I should never have stopped our friends from talking about his death. We had seen Hector’s lifeless, grey body, and the break out happened directly after.

We never really had a discussion about going back for his body because we were so consumed by our own safety. Kenji had suggested we try to collect Hector once, and I stormed out of the gym, not ready to come to the acceptance of my friend’s death. However, maybe if I hadn’t been so unaccepting, then the conversation would have occurred a lot sooner. I thought about the damage that happened to me in two months and Maze in six. It triggered a cold shiver to run through my body. After a year of Van Wicks experimentations, for Hector’s sake, I hoped he was dead.

I also couldn’t help but mourn for my mother; this was one of those times I needed to see her, to speak to her, to hug her. I wasn’t sure what to do and how to process the events unravelling, or even if I could. I needed one of her pep talks, to tell me everything was okay, and for her to say I was being dramatic. Though she wasn’t here, and she was never going to be here again. The never-ending sorrow of missing her led me to yearn for my fathers and brothers relationship.
